Sssssssss...SMACK!! (Ummm...I meant to do that)

Please stand up and be counted if you have ever had a bird fly into your sliding glass door or a window. I've had it happen 3 times that I'm sure of but another buddy says neither him nor any of his friends have. I cannot possibly be the only one that has had this happen.

Update. I asked the 4 people here at the office today and they all said a variation of the same thing:

"Not here, but when I lived in SC"

"I had it happen in San Diego"

"Hell yeah, twice. But not here"

"Yeah, and he came into my living room 'cause I didn't have a screen"

Now I feel better. And I also learned that apparently birds here, like in their counterparts in KY, are too smart to smack into a window.

Happened when I worked at a retail clothing store...bird got caught inside and nearly killed itself by continuing to fly into the windows up at the top.

ley me tell you Ed... here in canada it happens allthe time. esspecially during the winter. you see i don't think it to be the fact that we have intellectually challanged birds... it is just the fact the snow creates the visual illusion that the space continues. just like if you enter a room and one wall is a mirror. it momentarily appears that the room is twice the size. thus, you are not alone, many birds die from this actually. infact they made an entire WINDEX comercial about two robin's discussing the fact that WINDEX's "streak free shine" is dangerous cause birds would hurt thems on the "utterly spotless" windows. over and out.

Dennill,
I don't think your birds are necessarily stupid (although I came pretty close to saying that, didn't I?) but rather that mother nature has set aside a certian number of them to die.

However....if they're still flying around up in Canada in the winter, well that DOES say something.

Thanks for stopping by. I am now going to proclaim myself International.

Ed, I have birds flying into my windows all the time and many live to do it again. My front window actually has plop marks on it where feathers have stuck cause I dont do windows- atleast not often.

Funnier yet, My bro-in-law and I have had turkeys attacking the turkey in the basement window. They happen to be walking past and look over and see themselves in the window and mistake it for another buff looking tom and then commence to doing the turkey trot to the window, pecking and flailing themsleves at their opponent. Actually broke my bro-in-laws window. He nailed it about a week later when the season opened.

That does not surprise me one bit. Didn't you have a goat in the kitchen and a llama in the yard and all manner of other critters running around at one time? Or is my mind embellishing a little?

I could almost hear you calling Granny to come see what took up living in the cee-ment pond, Ellie Mae.

To tell the truth, I have often felt like Granny and Jn is definately Elle Mae and if you look at her post you will see what is currently in the ce-ment pond! No llamas, no goats but we did have a lamb who hung out in the house for a bit, and lots of chics and ducks were raised in our bathtubs along with a few turkeys. Life has been a true managerie. And there is truth to the notion that a tame turkey will drown in a rain storm from looking up with their mouths open- they are truly that dumb.

Ah ha! RQ's comment reminded me. The home we had up in Ohio. Big glass sliding door going out to the deck and I think maybe twice in 8 years there were little, itsy-bitsy "spots" on the glass with little downy feathers still there. But no birds laying dead on the deck or anything like that.

So, I guess I have experienced the kamikaze bird phenomenon. But, the lack of a bird cadaver(s) implies that Buckeye Birds must be very hard-headed and have shook themselves off after the crash and flown on their way.

No problem, Gunner. Had me wondering if I was like some kind of avian anti-christ or something. That's why I had to poll the masses.

Must say, I got a pretty good response, though.

At work for a while we had a bird-to-window count. The numbers got pretty high in the week before someone took it down. I wasnt there but apparently a squirrel also gave himself a bit of a concussion. -Jn
