Another long, meandering list

I like music. I always have. I am more concerned with the song than the tune, though foot stompin' boogie beats are a plus. If asked to pick my favorite genre it would be tough. Extremely tough. I love the blues. I love country. I love soul. I just love good songs. I do think, however, that if cornered in a dark back alley, facing down the business end of a broke off Pabst Blue Ribbon* bottle, and told to pick one and ONLY one genre, I would reply "Singer/Songwriters." I mean, who wants to be cut with a broken bottle?

There are so-o-o many more. These were "top of the head" entries. Each song made me think of four others. Since I had to stop at some point, I just stopped. I could probably keep going all morning.

* First time I typed this my finger slipped and I typed "Pabst Blur Ribbon", which, when you think about it, kinda works, too.
** This may be my all time favorite song. I had them play it at my first wedding. Possum sounds so forlorn, and the story is classic.

It was the third of September.
That day I'll always remember, yes I will.
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died.
I never got a chance to see him.
Never heard nothing but bad things about him.
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

And Mama just hung her head and said,
"Son, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

Well, well.
Hey Mama,
is it true what they say, that Papa never worked a day in his life?
And Mama, some bad talk going around town
saying that Papa had three outside children and another wife.
And that ain't right.

Hey, talk about Papa doing some store front preaching.
Talked about saving souls and all the time leeching.
Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord.

Mama just hung her head and said,
"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

"Hey, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."

Uh.
Hey Mama, I heard Papa called himself a jack of all trades.
Tell me is that what sent Papa to an early grave?
Folks say Papa would beg, borrow, steal to pay his bills.
Hey Mama, folks say that Papa was never much on thinking.
Spent most of his time chasing women and drinking.
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

And Mama looked up with a tear in her eye and said,
"Son, Papa was a rolling stone.
(Well, well, well, well)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

"Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."
"I said, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was alone."

Why am I constantly mistaken for Bill Murray?, out

Good playlist there, R' Ed. There's quite a few there that would be on my list, also.

I'd add some Flatt/Scruggs, Holmes Bros., Dylan, some Stones, some RL Burnside, one, maybe two Bo Diddleys and a few more.

We are both partial to When You Say Nothing At All. Allison Krause or Keith Whitley version, doesn't matter.
